here's how armand can still be bengali
why do i think so? no other good reason than i am bengali myself and i want armand to be. (also assad zaman's family is from bangladesh. bengali solidarity!!!)
bengal: the region in south asia comprising present-day bangladesh and the indian states of west bengal, odisha, assam and parts of bihar.
armand said in the season one finale, that takes place in 2022, he is a 514 year old vampire. is it 514 years including or excluding his human years? let's go with including. that means armand would have been born in 1508.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now what was going on in india and bengal in 1508? well, the mughals hadn't come to india yet; it's still about two decades before babur makes his way here. delhi was under the rule of the lodi dynasty, the delhi sultanate was in its dying days. most of north india, mainly uttar pradesh and bihar was under the jaunpur sultanate. bengal was still it's own independent kingdom, called the bengal sultanate. alauddin hussain shah had just seized power and become the sultan of bengal in 1494, beginning the hussain shahi dynasty (they ruled in bengal till 1538 when the mughals captured the region).
india as a country did not exist yet. even it's conception would be a few centuries away still. the subcontinent was a collection of big and small kingdoms and sultanates, constantly warring amongst themselves, some ruled by hindu rulers others by muslims, each with their own distinct histories and cultures. bengal was one of the most prosperous and thriving among them. the bangla language and bengali culture was just beginning to develop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
vasco da gama had arrived in india in 1498, landing at kozhikode on the malabar coast. this began the arrival of the portugese in india, and soon other european colonialists followed. they soon set up their capital in goa, built forts all along the western coast and established trade through obtaining licenses and exclusive permits from local rulers. they first made their way to the bay of bengal region around 1516, with the first portugese representative- a guy called joao coelho- coming to chittagong (present day bangladesh). the first factory was set up in chittagong the next year.
the portugese traded in spices and cotton and fruits and muslin and also slaves. the european indian ocean slave trade began with the coming of the portugese in the early 16th century. slavery in south asian societies had obviously existed long before, and it was a deeply complex and diverse system of dependency and regimes of slavery. slavery of youth and children was also pretty prevalent: it would not be uncommon for poor, farming families to sell away themselves or their children to zamindars (landlords) and colonial overlords in desperation. there were many, many cases of young children being forced to get onboard ships where they'd be held agains their will and taken to europe, the americas or south-east asia. goa and lisbon were the two cities that linked the movement of goods and people between the indian and atlantic oceans, but goa wasn't the only place where enslaved children were traded in portugese india nor lisbon the only european they were taken to.
one of those kids might as well have been arun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i know the brief glimpse at the talamasca files showed armand's origin to be in delhi but in this particular scene he clearly says that he was sent *to* delhi, thinking he was going to work on a merchant boat.
this is just a theory i have btw. armand could've been from maharastra or the deccan as well idk. anyway.
armand is a monster, a vicious, villanious creature of unfathomable powers and ferocity. but he is also so deeply tragic. he had been forcibly torn away from his people and his land. he has no memory of his family or his humanity. he has lived for over half a millenium. the india he might've known hasn't existed for centuries, and he never got to know the one that exists today. the bangla he might've spoken no one remembers anymore. he has nothing left of the human he was except that name.
further readings (STRONGLY SUGGESTED!!!):

""We are daily wage earners. We came to Delhi from Muzaffarpur in Bihar several decades ago for employment because we did not have enough land to do farming. By working as labourers in Delhi, we were supporting the families."
Amit, a member of Anil Thakur's family, told NewsClick that the factory had no regard for safety.
"Even gloves and masks were not given to them while working in the factory, which caused eye and respiratory problems to the workers.""
""Some permanent solution should be given to the family like the Delhi government gives Rs 1 crore along with a job on the death of an officer. Why doesn't it give the same amount to the labourers? Is there no value to the life of a labourer?""

Tussar Silk, The Story Of No-Violence Silk From India
Tussar Silk is produced mainly in the eastern regions of India including Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal.
It is also called ‘Wild Silk’. And there is a specific reason for it. These silkworms (Antheraea) are not domesticated creatures. They feed on wild trees instead of being confined to a little farm or an overly controlled environment.
There are two types of Tussar silk. Pure Tussar and Tussar Ghica. Pure Tussar is made using undamaged cocoons, which means the larvae die inside. On the other hand, Tussar Ghicha is the one in which the moth makes a hole at the top of the cocoon and breaks out and therefore unharmed. The moth flies out, mates, and produces more eggs; more importantly, it’s free!
This is why Tussar Silk has earned the name “No-Violence-Silk”. This is also why there has been a renewed interest in it by designers and textile enthusiasts as it offers ethical practices in fashion and it’s environmentally friendly. Even the trees on which the silkworms feed are not damaged or cut down. It is to be noted that most of the villagers don’t have the concept of violence or non-violence silk. For them, it is a modern fancy term. They have been making Tussar Ghicha silk for centuries.

okay so it's 2015 alright. i was in Bihar at my mother's place and it was a very fine evening. it was the time when there were earthquakes happening over there. there was no light at all. and the house is totally surrounded by farms. i was sitting and chilling and my mother suddenly shouts "SAANP SAANP SAANP". there were other people too but as an instinct, i grabbed a laathi which was nearest to me and ran towards my mom. the snake was not veryyy big but surely could strangle you. i chased it to the baari (baadi is like a place where the bathroom is and it's totally filled with trees btw) and it was so dark i just wanted to beat the laathi baaju me and let it go out khud se but unfortunately, i hit it's head. and i caught it and took it outside in front of everyone. I THOUGHT THEY'D BE SURPRISED BUT NO ONE UTTERED A SINGLE WORD. they just said, baahar phek de as if it was a very normal thing to happen (actually it is a very normal thing there)
and about the next day, there was an earthquake and we were all sitting outside in a hut kind of a thing and a snake tried to get in. so, my cousin just smashed it

Status: closed for @mismatchmavis Location: The Farm
Between her time searching for a new place and collecting items to make this place into more of a home than an empty room, she made sure she didn’t neglect her work tending to the animals on the farm. She had really gotten the hang of things since she started out and it was fun getting to spend time with the animals, talk to them as if they could give her any input on anything, and pretty much having an abundance of pets that she never had before. Sure there was Bihar, but a hermit crab was nothing in comparison to all the farm animals.
Wren had also gotten into the habit of naming the animals, starting out with the chickens and goats since she knew that with how much they provided, they were safe from being butchered. The problem came when she started getting a little too attached to the pigs when tending to them. They were cute! And she remembered a book that washed up once with a pig in it named Wilbur that she took for herself.
"Where’s my buddy Wilbur? Come over here! Oh look at you getting so big now!” she spoke to the large pig making its way over to her by the fencing. “Don’t tell the others, but I got you an extra little snack. I don’t want to make them jealous so take it quick.” she whispered, feeding him the treat, and gently petting his head, more focused on him than she was on realizing she had company.

The Role of Agriculture Organizations in Facilitating FPO Growth and Success
"Everything changed when the agricultural department connected us with larger organizations. Suddenly, we weren't just farmers anymore – we became agri-entrepreneurs," recalls Meena Kumari, leader of a thriving Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) in Uttar Pradesh. Her FPO's transformation highlights how agricultural organizations are becoming catalysts for rural prosperity.
A Network of Support
Behind every successful FPO lies a complex network of supporting institutions. The Food and Agriculture Organization works alongside national bodies to create an enabling environment for FPOs. From policy advocacy to technical support, these organizations form the backbone of India's growing FPO movement.
NABARD: The Financial Architect
The NABARD FPO portal has revolutionized how producer organizations access support. "Earlier, we struggled even to understand basic banking procedures," says Ramesh Kumar, an FPO director from Bihar. "Now, through NABARD's guidance, we've accessed credit worth ₹50 lakhs for our processing unit." This transformation in financial access has become a game-changer for many organizations.
Technology Partners Driving Change
The FPO Platform for India developed by Tata-Cornell Institute exemplifies how technology partners are reshaping the landscape. This interactive data platform connects FPOs with potential buyers, investors, and support organizations. "The platform helped us discover three major buyers for our organic produce," shares Prakash Reddy, whose Karnataka-based FPO now exports to Europe.
Knowledge Transfer and Capacity Building
Agricultural universities and research institutions play a crucial role in strengthening FPO agriculture India. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) regularly conducts training programs, helping FPOs adopt modern farming techniques and technologies. "The training we received on precision farming has doubled our productivity," notes Satinder Singh, whose Punjab-based FPO now leads in sustainable farming practices.
Market Linkage Facilitators
The Indian farmer's Agriculture organization ecosystem includes specialized agencies focusing on market connections. These organizations help FPOs understand market dynamics, quality requirements, and pricing strategies. The transformation is evident – FPOs working with these agencies report 30-40% higher returns compared to independent operations.
Digital Enablement Through the FPO Hub
The FPO Hub serves as a digital bridge between various stakeholders. "Through the hub, we connected with five other FPOs facing similar challenges. Now we share resources and learning," explains Vijay Patil, whose Maharashtra FPO collaboration has reduced operational costs by 25%.
The Registration and Compliance Support
The journey of FPO agriculture registration often seems daunting to farmer groups. Here, agricultural organizations provide crucial handholding support. From documentation to compliance requirements, these organizations ensure FPOs start their journey on the right foot. "Without their guidance, we would have given up in the first month itself," admits Lakshman Rao, who now heads a successful FPO in Telangana.
Creating Sustainable Business Models
Support organizations help FPOs discover and implement various FPO benefits. They assist in:
Developing business plans
Identifying value addition opportunities
Establishing quality control systems
Creating marketing strategies
Success stories abound. The Madhya Pradesh Soybean Producers FPO, guided by agricultural organizations, now operates its own processing unit, capturing higher margins in the value chain.
Research and Innovation Support
Agricultural research organizations continuously develop new technologies and methodologies specifically for FPOs. From climate-resilient farming techniques to post-harvest management solutions, these innovations help FPOs stay competitive and sustainable.
Policy Advocacy and Representation
Agricultural organizations serve as the voice of FPOs at policy forums. Their advocacy has led to several farmer-friendly policies, including:
Simplified lending norms
Priority sector status
Tax benefits
Special scheme allocations
Building International Connections
International agricultural organizations help FPOs explore global markets. "Through their support, we learned about international organic certification requirements," says Anjali Sharma, whose FPO now exports organic spices to three countries.
The Road Ahead: Collaborative Growth
The future of FPO development lies in stronger collaboration between supporting organizations. "We're seeing a shift from isolated support to integrated assistance," observes Dr. Raghavan, an agricultural policy expert. "This coordinated approach is crucial for sustainable FPO growth."
Agricultural organizations are not just facilitators; they're partners in the FPO journey. Their role extends beyond traditional support to becoming active participants in the success story of Indian agriculture. As these organizations evolve and adapt to changing needs, they continue to shape the future of collective farming in India.
The transformation of Indian agriculture through FPOs is a testament to the power of organized support. With agricultural organizations providing the foundation, FPOs are not just surviving – they're thriving and revolutionizing rural India's agricultural landscape. The Power of Education in Transforming Rural Communities
Education has long been recognized as one of the most powerful tools for social change. In rural communities, where access to opportunities is often limited and systemic barriers are entrenched, education stands out as the key to unlocking potential and breaking the cycle of poverty. I have seen this transformative power firsthand, particularly in Bihar, where education has the ability to uplift not just individuals, but entire communities.
Education as a Transformative Tool
At its core, education has the power to transform lives. For children growing up in rural Bihar, education opens doors to a world of opportunities that would otherwise remain closed. In many areas, the lack of access to quality education limits children to lives of poverty and hardship. However, when children are given the chance to attend school and receive a proper education, it changes the trajectory of their future.
I have seen the impact of this firsthand in my work with institutions like Ameer Hasan Shakoor Ahmad College and the Millat Teachers' Training College. These institutions have helped countless students access higher education and professional training. By enabling young people to learn and grow, we are giving them the tools they need to overcome the challenges that once seemed insurmountable.
The Role of Education in Community Development
Education doesn’t just benefit individuals—it has the power to uplift entire communities. When a person receives an education, they don’t just improve their own life; they become agents of change within their community. Education fosters critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills, which are essential for addressing the challenges that rural communities often face.
In rural Bihar, where agriculture is the backbone of the economy, educated individuals can introduce new farming techniques, sustainable practices, and innovative solutions that improve productivity and food security. Educated women, in particular, are often at the forefront of positive change. They are more likely to invest in the health and education of their children, breaking the generational cycle of poverty and promoting long-term development.
When entire communities are educated, the benefits spread quickly. Improved literacy rates, better healthcare awareness, and higher rates of employment contribute to stronger economies and more resilient societies. By prioritizing education, we are not only addressing the immediate needs of individuals but also building a foundation for long-term, sustainable development.
The Ripple Effect: Educating One Generation to Lift the Next
One of the most powerful aspects of education is its ability to create a ripple effect. When one person is educated, the impact extends far beyond that individual. Educated parents are more likely to send their children to school, providing them with the same opportunities for success. This creates a cycle of progress that can persist for generations.
For example, research has shown that girls who receive an education are more likely to delay marriage, have fewer children, and ensure that their own children are educated. This is particularly important in rural areas, where early marriage and high birth rates are common. Educating one girl can have a profound impact on the well-being of an entire family and community.
This ripple effect is also seen in the workplace. Educated individuals who find employment often go on to inspire others in their community, demonstrating the power of education to improve not just economic status but also social standing. As one person rises, they often bring others with them, creating a more inclusive and equitable society.
In Bihar, where access to education has historically been limited, we are beginning to see the first signs of this ripple effect. Schools, colleges, and training centers are creating opportunities that, in turn, create a more educated and skilled workforce, leading to improved livelihoods for individuals and better outcomes for their communities.
Investing in Education for a Brighter Future
As we look toward the future, it’s clear that education must continue to be a top priority. In rural areas like Bihar, where barriers to education are still high, there is an urgent need for investment in infrastructure, teacher training, and scholarships to ensure that every child has access to quality education.
Through initiatives like the Milli Trust, I’ve dedicated my efforts to ensuring that children from marginalized communities have the resources they need to succeed. We are working to build educational institutions that not only provide academic learning but also equip students with the skills they need to thrive in the modern world.
Moreover, by focusing on practical and vocational education, we can empower young people to gain skills that are directly relevant to their communities. Whether it’s in healthcare, technology, or agriculture, education can provide the tools that individuals need to create change and build a better future.
The transformation of rural communities through education is a long-term investment. It requires not just resources but a commitment to changing mindsets and breaking down the barriers that stand in the way of success. But the rewards of this investment are immense: an educated, skilled, and empowered population that is capable of tackling the challenges of the future with confidence.
Education is the foundation of empowerment. It is a tool that has the potential to break the cycle of poverty, uplift marginalized communities, and create lasting change. In rural Bihar, where the challenges are great but the potential is even greater, education offers hope. By investing in the education of our youth, we are not just changing individual lives—we are transforming communities, creating a ripple effect that can bring about real, sustainable development for generations to come.
As we continue our work through initiatives like Ameer Hasan Shakoor Ahmad College and Millat Teachers' Training College, I remain deeply committed to ensuring that every child in rural Bihar has access to the education they deserve. With education as our tool, we can change the future of Bihar and build a more equitable, prosperous society for all.
